If you, like me, have often wished there were more of a jazz fusion scene in Asheville, I'm here with some great news. Local Asheville trio Triptych Soul is hosting an Albumita release party this Saturday, February 18th at West Asheville's UpCountry Brewing Co, and you should definitely go. Triptych Soul's self-titled "Albumita" (not quite an EP, not quite a full album) blends jazz, electronic, fusion, and classical sounds created with a variety of instruments, including synthesizers, percussion, guitars, and vocals. It's more than just straight, classic jazz; rather, it brings in elements that travel into the realms of the dreamily psychedelic, the experimental, and, as the name implies, the soulful.  Introspective lyrics on the Albumita are meditative and even a little cosmic. Triptych Soul is, without a doubt, interested in exploring the nature of life and the soul through music—no simple task. But the seven tracks never veer into the too-heady or the cheesy. They stay in that sweet territory of the mind-expanding and the hip-swaying. The sheer talent of the band members—Will Peterson (bass, vocals), Ben Paulson (drums, vocals), and Max Witt (keyboard/synth)—is clearly a reason for their ability to balance the metaphysical and the musical.  The band cites a wide range of influences, including Hiatus Kaiyote, Snarky Puppy, Radiohead, and Modest Mouse, but the sound is uniquely their own. According to Witt, "We are really trying to bring a rock, jazz, classical, soul fusion into the Asheville scene, but mainly the music reflects all of our musical backgrounds merged into a trio." Check out Triptych Soul's Albumita and go support this Saturday at UpCountry Brewing. Armadilla starts things off at 9 p.m. and Triptych Soul (with special guests) takes the stage at 10. In case you need any more enticing, there's also a raffle, plus delicious brews and food from UpCountry.  Triptych Soul's albumita will be available for purchase and streaming on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube. CDs and merchandise will be on sale at Saturday's show.
