Area artist Mark Flowers will have a solo exhibition of his work at Pink Dog Creative Gallery (348 Depot St. in the River Arts District) beginning June 2. An opening reception will kick things off at 6:00 p.m., and the work will be up until July 9. The show, titled "Signs of Life," will include Flowers' mixed-media artworks, which he describes as "narratives that reflect the world around him." Flowers will be sharing his thoughts on his process, his art, and the show, with Asheville Grit. This is the first post in his new series.     Pieces of the Whole Preparing for a show of your work allows you to begin to see the work as a whole statement and not just individual moments of effort. As I work toward what pieces are going into the show, I notice reoccurring themes. The first one is the airplane (pictured). Partly, this is just to give a sense of movement in the overall composition; but airports are some of my favorite places.   I think if I didn’t spend my life teaching and making art, I would have sought a career working in one. Airports are the crossroads of humanity, and therefore a great place to people watch. Some of these plane images came from a trip to San Francisco where my son, Carson, showed me a place to watch planes coming in for a landing. In that recent post-9/11 world, it felt like I was getting away with something by being that close to landing aircraft.   My work will be @ The Pink Dog Creative Gallery, 348 Depot St, Asheville, NC, June 2 through July 9.
