AMOS receives art donation

This is a beautiful work. Here's the press release: The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) has received a donation of a large-scale print installation called “Advance,” by Appalachian State University art professor April Flanders. The piece was noticed by the anonymous donor, a local art and science lover, at the Blue Spiral Gallery in downtown Asheville. “Advance” found its new home on the wall of the museum’s main exhibit floor this week. Celebrate Earth Day and meet the artist April Flanders on April 21st at 1:00pm. A live printmaking event will follow her talk in the AMOS STEM lab from 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm. “Advance” is an art piece that addresses the global nature of the problem of invasive species. To create the piece, artist April Flanders collected plants invasive to the Appalachian region, and used these in a layered monotype process to print brightly colored sheets of printmaking paper that reflect the exotic leaf patterns of these plants. She created groupings of each animal using traditional paper-cutting techniques, representing 77 different animal species invasive to North America and Hawaii, and mounted the whole assemblage using simple magnetic hardware. See this new breathtaking art work and meet the artist, April Flanders, at 1:00pm in the Asheville Museum of Science for a conversation about Advance. She will discuss how and why she made the piece and how each of us can combat invasive plants and animals in our own backyard. Then join the artist in the AMOS STEM lab anytime between 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm for a live, hands-on, art printing event. All participants will make their very own plant and animal screen prints, while learning about invasive species in our region. This event is free with regular admission.
