Opening receptions will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 30, at UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall for new art exhibitions by alumna
Celia Gray and student
Lily Furniss. Here's more from a press release:
One Gold Song, an exhibition of abstract “paintings” created by Celia Gray using traditional folk rag rug hooking, will be on view in the Owen Hall Second Floor Gallery from March 26-April 27. Gray completed the Core Fellowship Program at Penland School of Crafts, and then went on to earn a B.A. at UNC Asheville and an MFA at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. A studio artist now working in Chapel Hill, Gray began with paint, but transitioned to a different material. “The tradition of rug hooking offers another, different set of expectations and limitations,” says Gray. “When making anything, I prefer for the material to lead.”
The S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in UNC Asheville’s Owen Hall will host Everyone Meets Their End Eventually, the BFA Senior Exhibition by student Lily Furniss from March 30-April 10. Furniss’ drawings explore the fear of death and she cautions that some of the interview statements that are part of the exhibit discuss death, drug addiction and suicide, but that her intention is positive. “The series intends to create a sense of community,” says Furniss. “Everyone has to face the reality that they will die one day and the goal is to help the viewer understand that they are not alone in their fears or strategies for coping.”
These exhibitions and receptions are free and open to everyone, and both Owen Hall galleries are open weekdays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
