Moe's BBQ sides
I've lived in Asheville for many years and I've never eaten at Moe's Original Bar B Que - until November when my husband and I had the pleasure of eating there one Friday night. We managed to try nearly everything on the menu (how often do you get the chance to say that?) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I even tried everything knowing I wasn't going to be able to finish it all (that's just what pregnancy does to me. I'm no longer a bottomless pit for food.) Obviously Moe's is known for the barbecue (it's in their name. How can they not be known for that?). I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Woodfin location had won Asheville Wing War this year - and I really love wings. I like to think I'm a bit of a wing connoisseur seeing how my dad lived in Buffalo for over 20 years and I visited (and ate wings) often. The wings may have been my favorite part of the meal - even without the sauce they make. Maybe I'm one of the few that would go to a barbecue joint for wings? I'm ok with that. I had high hopes for the barbecue - and I was not let down. I really enjoyed the smoked pulled chicken - to the point I wouldn't mind having their pulled chicken delivered to my office tomorrow, if anyone is offering to drive it to Mars Hill. Their ribs were really good and my husband would most definitely agree with me there. And I'm a fan of having extra sauce if I want or need it, and they had plenty to go around, just in case. Moe's is also known for their fairly traditional southern sides, which my southern husband was all about.  I couldn't get enough of the mac & cheese and the skillet corn. The husband was all about the jalapeno cheese grits, which I even enjoyed and I'm not normally into grits. They also had fried green tomatoes which were fantastic. Their corn bread? Worth every spicy bite. My husband isn't a fan of pickles or anything pickled. That may have been his only real complaint of the evening - and even then he wasn't complaining. (I love all things pickles, so I gladly ate whatever had been touched by a pickle.) For my vegetarian friends, there are options! They have a tempeh version of their barbecue sandwich made with vegetables. The atmosphere was casual with a sports bar - but not too loud sports bar - vibe. When you enter this location, you order at the counter and food doesn't take long to come out. Parking seemed to be at a premium, but we lucked out for a Friday night and got a parking spot right next to the entrance. Asheville is such a tricky place for parking, so I was expecting to be out of luck when it came to super accessible. The meals I felt were reasonably priced. Next time we go, we'll take our son. The kid's meals are SO well priced, and I'm definitely we'll have leftovers to take home.
